Dream 3: Leviathan of the Coiled Words
The dream unfolded not in water or fire, but in dryness.
A vast desert stretched beneath a starless sky, sand shifting like whispers beneath the dreamer’s feet. There was no horizon to move toward, no sea to fear. Only expanse. Only exposure.
The dunes rose and fell like frozen waves, etched with ancient Arabic script that glowed faintly before dissolving into the wind. Words appeared just long enough to be recognized, then vanished, as if meaning itself refused to remain unexamined.
The dreamer, a devout Muslim whose waking life was anchored in salat, Quran recitation, and community leadership, felt the earth’s subtle tremor. From beneath the sands emerged Leviathan, their serpentine form uncoiling through the grains like a vein of living obsidian.
There was no roar. Only a resonant hum that vibrated in the chest, echoing the adhan turned inward.
Leviathan’s eyes gleamed with quiet intensity. Their voice arrived not as thunder, but as measure, carrying the weight of what had been spoken too fluently and examined too little.
The Tangled Threads
Words can become refuge. They can also become armor.
In waking life, the dreamer’s speech commanded respect. Khutbahs delivered with precision. Counsel offered with confidence. Teachings on unity, modesty, and the straight path articulated without hesitation.
Yet beneath the eloquence lay a quieter fracture. Words twisted not toward others, but against the self.
Doubt in personal piety.
Shame over faltering ibadah.
Distance from questioning family members deemed too Westernized, too undisciplined, too dangerous to linger with.
The anger of the boiling depths had cooled. In its place stood pride, refined and articulate. Debates won through intricate reasoning. Judgments veiled as nasihah. Silence imposed where vulnerability threatened certainty.
Leviathan circled slowly, their body weaving patterns in the sand that formed, then unraveled, like half-remembered ayahs.
Your tongue guards the deen, but coils around your ruh.
Visions rose from the dunes.
Arguments that silenced a cousin’s sincere questions.
Stern counsel to youth masking private inconsistency in prayer.
Public warnings against innovation paired with quiet neglect of devotion.
The words had not lied.
They had deflected.
Pride’s Silent Coil
The sands began to spiral, rising into a towering funnel around the dreamer. Leviathan’s tail flicked, sending grains skyward that burned briefly with inscription.
Kibr.
Pride, named at last.
“Why show yourself now?” the dreamer called, voice steady from long habit. “I seek only Allah’s pleasure.”
Leviathan paused, their massive form arching like a minaret’s shadow stretched across the night.
You seek approval through words unowned. Pride builds minbars of isolation. It whispers ‘I know best’ while the heart starves.
The funnel tightened. Winds carried echoes of the dreamer’s own reprimands, now turned inward.
Accusations of laziness once hurled at others.
Rigid interpretations shielding fear of being questioned.
Community standing purchased through eloquence rather than humility.
Suspended in the vortex, the dreamer felt the pressure. Not crushing. Clarifying.
Pride had not made them false.
It had made them unreachable.
Unraveling the Coil
Leviathan extended a ridge of scale, steadying the dreamer amid the whirling sand.
Name the pride as you would confess before the Merciful. Not to condemn, but to loosen its hold.
The words emerged slowly, like supplication whispered in sujood.
“I take pride in my knowledge, fearing it hides my ignorance.”
The sands slowed.
“I judge to elevate myself, avoiding true muhasabah.”
The winds eased.
“I silence questions in others to quiet them in me.”
The funnel collapsed into calm dunes. Moonlight broke through, revealing a small oasis where palms stood unmoving and water reflected the sky without distortion.
Leviathan inclined their head.
Pride coiled isolates. Humility owned connects. Your words can bridge, not bind.
Walking the Uncoiled Path
Leviathan led the dreamer toward the oasis, their immense form shrinking as they moved, no longer adversary but guide.
They walked beneath palms heavy with fruit, the air cool and still.
Tawhid demands wholeness, Leviathan murmured. Integrate the proud shadow, and your voice serves rahma, not control.
The dreamer felt language reform within.
Counsel tempered with empathy.
Reflection shared without performance.
Prayer enriched by acknowledged frailty rather than hidden struggle.
Strength no longer required distance.
Awakening to Sincerity
At the oasis’s edge, Leviathan sank into the sand, leaving behind a final inscription etched briefly in the earth.
Ikhlas.
You wake to gatherings and to gatherings of the heart. Speak uncoiled. Advise with adab. Reflect with sincerity. Connect with mercy. Pride unowned rises as me. Pride integrated whispers truth.
The dreamer stirred awake on their prayer rug as fajr’s adhan called from afar.
The tongue felt lighter.
Not emptied of words, but freed from their armor.
Leviathan rested deeper still.
The path ahead clearer.
The silence, honest.
